Christmas Gifts - The Rookie Dad

Board games

Yes that is right.  Old fashioned board games.  I cannot count all of the times that the Rookie pulls out Operation and we laugh each and every time he hits the side as he is trying to get out a cell phone from the patients stomach.  Yes that is right, a cell phone.  Many of the board games that you grew up with as a child have been modernized like Operation to include a cell phone.   Think Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, or Ants in the Pants.

Legos

OK this is an easy one.  Children LOVE Legos.  So it makes an easy idea for a Christmas gift. The great thing about Legos though, is just like board games, it takes you back your childhood. The Rookie and I have spent hours playing with his Legos.  It is so much fun to build cars and play with them or even building an entire city with your son and family.

DIY Kit

Even if you are not a handyman, you probably have a set of screwdrivers or hammer sitting around the house.  Which is perfect for a DIY bird house kit from your local craft store. Your little one can help you build the bird house and after the glue dries, you can give them creative freedom to decorate the bird house.  It isn’t limited to a bird house either, think bird feeder, or a custom-made stepping stone.  A project that you and your child will be able to enjoy for years to come.

Art Work

Much like a DIY kit, artwork is perfect time to help spark the creative juices in your child.  Not only that, but find a wall in your house where you will be able to show off your child’s art work.  It might not look like the Mona Lisa but you never know, you may have the next artist sitting right at your table as paints to their hearts desire.

Great list! Board games are great. One we love is “Sequence.” Another gift we have done is the family getaway, like a waterpark overnight / weekend.

Sequence is awesome! Fell in love with that game a while back. I like the idea of an overnight water park stay.

In Today’s fast paced, technology addicted society, I am all about finding ways to slow down and be together as a family.

Spot on with the board games, legos, and cook books. My wife does a lot of artwork with the kids during the week while I’m at work. But there’s no better time as a family than board games and cooking together.

I think with Today’s fast paced society, people are forgetting what it takes to be a family sometimes. Kid’s have become conditioned to the instant gratification of being able to play video games when they want and being able to watch whatever movie they want, rather than what is on the TV and being part of the family. My favorite times with my family are when my cell phone is in the other room and we are sitting down playing a game or talking as a family.
