Christmas Gifts - The Rookie Dad

Cookbook

Children might not enjoy getting books for Christmas.  But what they do enjoy helping you in the kitchen. And, who doesn’t have a hard time getting their child to eat?  If your child helps you cook dinner they might just eat their broccoli that night?

Museum Membership

Children love museums.  Many of which are child friendly.  The great thing is that with your membership, it pays for itself usually after two visits and then essentially your visits after that are FREE! Museums are great for children to run around and explore in.  Not only that, but you are learning with your child as they look on in wonder at dinosaur bones or explore space in the museum.  Not only that, but you are supporting an organization that will continue to educate children far into the future.

PBS Membership

YAWN! I hear you! This one might not sound excited but you are wrong.  Many local PBS stations have family memberships which get you free admission to many of your local museums and attractions.  Not only that with those family memberships your child will get to meet many of their favorite PBS characters from Super Why, Wild Kratts, Curious George, and Sesame Street.  Plus, like a museum membership, you are supporting an organization that will educate child far into the future.  (While I work for PBS and encourage you to support your local PBS station, that in NO way influenced the idea of a PBS membership)

Great list! Board games are great. One we love is “Sequence.” Another gift we have done is the family getaway, like a waterpark overnight / weekend.

Sequence is awesome! Fell in love with that game a while back. I like the idea of an overnight water park stay.

In Today’s fast paced, technology addicted society, I am all about finding ways to slow down and be together as a family.

Spot on with the board games, legos, and cook books. My wife does a lot of artwork with the kids during the week while I’m at work. But there’s no better time as a family than board games and cooking together.

I think with Today’s fast paced society, people are forgetting what it takes to be a family sometimes. Kid’s have become conditioned to the instant gratification of being able to play video games when they want and being able to watch whatever movie they want, rather than what is on the TV and being part of the family. My favorite times with my family are when my cell phone is in the other room and we are sitting down playing a game or talking as a family.
