As many of you know we are doing cloth diapers. They have been a godsend and we can not give them enough praise.
We chose the BumGenius 4.0 All In Ones with the hook and loop (can not use the word Velcro since it is trademarked or something like that). We recently have run into an issue with the hook and loops however. It has frayed, preventing the diapers from closing properly. There are some diapers that will not stay on the Kid and looks like it is falling from him.
However, the ever resourceful Hot Mama has come up with a solution. She is breaking out the old sewing machine to fix them. Our local JoAnn’s Fabric Store (yes I have been in there I will admit it) has started having a section that is just for cloth diapers so we are able to buy the Velcro to be able to replace the tabs and the Velcro it attached to.
We have only repaired a few of the diapers but the ones that we have, as you can tell we have basically gone away from the tab and put the Velcro under the existing tab part of the diaper. This has made a drastic improvement on how these diapers hold.
In the end we will probably be spending close to $30 to repair all the diapers, in the long view of it all, we are still saving money. We are not buying disposable diapers at all which is saving us a bunch of money. After a year we are repairing them which is not that bad if you think about it.

Ah the cloth nappies… we just started with them too… I should post an update soon, but the one’s we chose have no velcro so hopefully this won’t be a problem. *touch wood*
What brand did you get? We like the velcro because we can get a customized fit.

W have three kids, and have used cloth diapers for all of them. I would love to know how much cash we have saved through it all. Only problem now is, two of them are still in cloth which means A LOT of diaper laundry. Great post.
We wash our diapers twice a week. I believe over the course of a year you could save up to $1200 on diapers for one child. So if you average 3 years of 3 children at that rate your looking at $10,800 you have saved.
I remember using cloth diapers when our almost five year old daughter was a baby. We used a lot of different types of cloth diapers but the ones I mainly used were the Bum Genius because they were the ones that closely resembled a disposable diaper and they were a lot easier to use (in my opinion). I also remember having the same problem with them that you are currently having.
We used gDiapers which didn’t save us money compared to disposables, but it certainly helped out the environment. I think you’re doing a really cool thing. Good for you for being resourceful! We also found that, over time and with washing, the “hook and loop” (cough – velcro) would gradually become less sticky. You may already be doing this, but I found it helpful not to use fabric softener (or am I imagining that?) and also to close the velcro on itself in the wash (fold it shut) to protect it. Good luck!
Great post, it’s nice to see a dad sharing the cloth diaper info. I think it’s great that only have had to replace the aplix (velcro) after 1 year, I was wondering how long they hold up. I only use snaps, because the aplix rubs baby’s belly, making it red. I hear that the aplix fits better though.
That is what we have heard too about the velcro. That is why we chose it and have been very happy with it.
