Combining the two things I love, grilling and pizza should have been a given. Why it wasn’t is beyond me. Maybe I thought that there was only one way to make it… go to Papa Murphy’s and take ‘n’ bake it at home. Keyword bake… not grill.

In Kansas City you’d be hard-pressed to find a backyard (or a rebellious apartment owner who has gone against his rental agreement) that doesn’t have a barbecue grill around. It is in the air we breathe each and everyday. Literally, I walk out of my office and smell the five barbecue joints that are all within walking distance of my office.

We grill just about everything known to man. Personally, I have grilled vegetables, watermelons, a rotisserie chicken, a whole turkey, smoked salmon, and even most recently bananas. Yes you hear me right… bananas. I told you we try everything.

Out of everything that I have grilled, there is one thing I had not even thought about grilling… a pizza.

I can’t really explain why. My family is huge fanatics of pizza. It is our go-to meal if we have forgotten to thaw out what we were going to have for dinner that particular evening. My son also loves pizza… ask him want he wants to eat and it’s either burritos or pizza… and more than likely it’s pizza. Also, it is one of my few weaknesses when it comes to my diet. I can’t just eat one… two… three… or even four. I’ll eat an entire large pizza… by myself. Only to have my colleagues say that I am the skinniest guy they know who always has either a donut or a piece of pizza in my hand.

Needless to say, I love pizza!

Getting ready to grill our Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake pizza – The Rookie Dad

This time it was different. How the idea for in my head I don’t know… ok partially because Papa Murphy’s approached me and said, “hey we want you to try grilling a pizza… oh and we will give you a Big Green Egg to do it on too.” All of which is true, I’ve heard of wood fired pizza before but grilling it was new territory for my grilling prowess.

Now, I will say don’t do what I did… get yourself a good heat shield to grill it on. You don’t want the crust right above the flame so get a pizza stone or a pizza pan to grill on. Also, don’t put your Papa Murphy’s pizza straight on the grill with the cardboard tray… or you’ll end up like me… eating the toppings of my Papa’s All Meat pizza with nothing but a burnt crust that tastes like cardboard.

You would think that a Kansas City boy where we are famous for barbecue would know that.

So this weekend when you are still inevitably coming up with something to do with your dad… go out and grab some Papa Murphy’s pizza and fire up the grill.
